I think the simplest solution to that is to drive the update into Yocto 
whenever possible. They release every six months, so it should mostly be 
enough for our needs.

Having patches on top of Yocto is probably acceptable, but a totally different 
version? It needs a very good reason, because it makes our life a little more 
difficult.
