I also face the same problem on my Ubuntu box. I have libz installed. But It looks like the way libxml is getting build in external is problem. Same work fine on CentOS.
When I enabled VERBOSE on for dependencies/libxml2, I do not see -lpthread -lz -lm in the CCLD command.
