We are not doing this because we expect that these interns are going to produce Hugh amounts of code or docs or whatever that will significantly change a project and make it better than its competitors in the short time that they are being paid as an intern. It’s about giving people from underrpesented groups an opportunity and experience. It’s a small step to improving ASF diversity. Probably more important than anything else, it’s about the ASF learning what needs to change and changing to become a more welcoming place for under represented groups. Long term, Yes, I believe the benefits can be Hugh if it makes our projects more sustainable by having better communities and we produce better software by having more diverse opinions/views/ideas. But talking about “picking winners” in respect to the contribution by the interns during their relatively short engagement while they’re being paid doesn’t make sense to me.
