Can 'make install' clean target directory prior to installation?

Multiple versions of mochiweb in the erlang/lib directory can/will cause the
http stack to malfunction. Can the 'make install' process clean the erlang/lib
directory prior to installing a new build?
I'm not certain this isn't a bug.
