don't know what the plans are, but we should be able to backport the
template block to Cocoon 2.1 so that people have the choice to use
either the "old" or the refactored version of jx-template
generator/transformer.

If someone feel like doing it, there should IIRC not be any technical
problems doing it. There might be some Java 1.4 dependencies, don't
remember.
