It is hard to see that GUI changes would have any function except for the very few who understand the difference between roots and sub-CAs.
It is similar to the EV green bar. It doesn't make any difference for "normal" people. The recent screw-ups didn't invalidate the system; it rather made the certificates vendors a bit more concerned about their operations which is good.
