We were forced to return some value into the CN field (today using simply the email address as the only validated content) for the low level client certificates. Specially Thunderbird/Firefox and Opera reacted very bad to certificates that didn't had the CN field populated (as suggested by the Mozilla CA Policy for only populating subject content when validated).
