NSS has done several projects in the past (recently, RSA-PSS signatures
and some TLS improvements), which as far as I know have been very
successful.

Why not getting Firefox to use the new NSS database format, and be able to load it from a global directory instead of the firefox profile directory ? (even if it's not strictly talking NSS).

It's not a very big task, the biggest part might be en up being checking that's there's no performance regression, and no unfortunate lock that would hinter actual multiple use of the database.
