Ok, after inspecting the problem a little further it turns out the module in question is in fact incompatible with Firefox 3.6+, for everyone, not just me. It seems some users thought they had it running while they didn't, which caused some confusion.
The problem therefor lies with the company providing the module and not with FF and NSS, so I've contacted them about the issue. Consider this one solved, while it might still be interesting for someone else how to get more feedback from NSS and FF when loading a module fails.
