I filed bug 628312 above the original problem that don't have an API to set the expected host, and have a prototype fix, but can't get it to work.

In the meantime, I need the workaround. After sinking a full day of highly concentrated work into it, I am still stuck on this:

   * check what the exact error is, and handle "hostname mismatches
cert" error only (OPEN - that's why I tried to get the
     nsITransportSecurityInfo.errorMessage above, so I don't know how
     to achieve that)
   * override that error only if the hostname in the cert matches my
expected hostname (OPEN: I can suppress the error dialog, but
don't know how to let the connection proceed)

Can somebody help, please? This is a blocker for me right now, I can't deploy XMPP without STARTTLS.
