One final question: Does anyone know what Thunderbird 3 will be doing in terms of OCSP checks? Will this problem affect end entity certificates issued by Microsec for S/MIME use?

I would expect it to be identical to FF3. They use the same PSM and NSS.

Thanks for the answer. Given the current schedule for Thunderbird 3 and the low usage of signed/encrypted email, it's not as critical IMO to address the situation with regard to Microsec certificates usable for S/MIME. What I'd like to see from Microsec is a plan to first address fixing certificates for SSL/TLS web sites (to prevent problems with Firefox 3) and then to proceed to resolving any issues with certs usable for S/MIME (to prevent problems with Thunderbird 3).
