On behalf of Bob Relyea, who did the majority of the work on this feature, we would like to announce that a new feature for sharing the NSS database amongst multiple applications is ready for testing.

The feature is included in NSS 3.12 which is the version that got shipped in Firefox 3.

We would like to invite the community to start testing this feature, for stability and usability. For the impatient, here is a quick HOWTO page that illustrates a setup with step by step instructions: http://wiki.mozilla.org/NSS_Shared_DB_Howto

If you'd like to know more, please read http://wiki.mozilla.org/NSS_Shared_DB

if you find problems, please feel free to report them in bugzilla.mozilla.org, Product NSS, Component Libraries, and assign them to Bob.

We consider to enable this feature by default in future versions of the Mozilla applications.

We'll have to solve some details, though. Especially the manual merging described on the HOWTO page must be avoided by some automatic conversion and merging available at the application level.

The longer wiki page has some ideas on this topic.
One more idea is: Mozilla applications usually have a named profile. Different applications that use identical profile names could automatically share the same NSS database, without requiring further configuration.

Thanks in advance for your testing, thoughts and reports.
Kai
