I've been playing with the CCK this morning - success! The extension
is packed with our root certificate, which is added via javascript in
the extension. Also, I guess the most current CCK works fairly well
with Firefox 3, but since I do a lot of other customizations outside
the CCK I didn't test much else beyond the certificate import routine.
I have confirmed that it works for power users as well, and that the
option to hide the extension from the list works. Guessing the
similarities in architecture between 2 and 3 mean this actually does
work.

Thanks for your help, guys - I need a few good pointing fingers
telling me where to look. :)
