Oh, when you previously wrote "form archives" you meant "forum archives".
I understand now.

Bob's email client (a.k.a. Mozilla's email client, the same one I use) sends
out standards conformant S/MIME v3 email messages. Today, you and I have
established that Outlook Express has no trouble reading signed emails
from Bob's client, when those emails are sent directly to the recipient.

Some (many) mailing list servers and newsgroup servers alter the messages
as they forward them, causing the signatures to become invalid. Sadly,
Mozilla's list server is one of those. :( The most common way they do that
is to append some text or an attachment to the message to identify the
mailing list through which it was sent. Some email clients deal with
invalid signatures by simply refusing the display the body of the message
whose signature is invalid. I gather than OE is one of those clients.
That's why I personally don't send signed messages to newsgroups or to
mailing lists that are known to mangle messages. (Note that Mozilla's
email client, built into Thunderbird and SeaMonkey, will display messages
with invalid signatures, and show an icon that signifies the bad signature.)

My point is that the problem with displaying Bob's postings is not the
fault of Bob's email client, but rather of non-compliant servers who mangle
messages.

Perhaps there is some configuration option (preference) by which OE users
can persuade it to display messages with invalid signatures.
