I believe was standardized under the umbrella of the IETF's SecSH WG...

Is the sFTP you are talking about more than just FTP over an SSL
connection?
FTPS (ala HTTPS) is FTP-over-SSL.
SFTP, confusingly enough, is a a completely different protocol running
over SSH. I would presume that adding it natively to Mozilla would thus
be a lot of work.
