In bug 1316755, I'm working on removing support for the IPDL keywords spawns, opens and bridges. These have been superseded by endpoints, a more general mechanism for starting up IPDL actors. The only drawback is that endpoints don't allow for static analysis of the relationships between processes, but it isn't clear how useful this analysis is.
I have patches up for review for removing all of the existing uses of these in the tree. If you have any patches in progress that use any of these, you can look at the patches in the bugs blocking 1316755 to see how to convert them, or feel free to ask me for help.
