After much frustration, finally got the updates working... Issues was related to brand.properties file.
be careful while creating brand.properties and brand.dtd files. Some utf editors will add a byte order mark(BOM) character into your file, and this will cause errors within XUL runners stringbundle functions that are used in the update process.
