remote-install.enabled will only prevent installs from non-whitelisted sites.  
social.enabled is merely a way to disable social without removing all your 
providers (ie. you want to temporarily disable social).  installation of a new 
provider always enables social.

empty any social.manifest entries, social.directory (not currently used anyway) 
and the social.whitelist entry.
