This article has a terrific overview on mtime and other file system wonkiness
and goes into detail on implications for build systems. There’s even discussion
of implications of using file hashes for build system DAGs. As a bonus, it is
also a fairly good overview of the ways Make is a bad build system. Overall, a
must read/bookmark for build system folks.
