You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I run the following command:

$ sudo service lightdm restart

on a system which has lightdm (installed, in use) and xdm (installed,
not in use), I get an error message in TTY7:

"ot starting X display manager (xdm): it is not the default display
manager"

Expected lightdm to restart.

It's stuck there and I can either reboot at that point or press ctrl-
alt-f1, log in, and run the command again.

Removing xdm does not resolve the issue, as I get stuck on TTY7, but I
no longer see the error.
