This is reproducible, and is a recent regression in 12.04. The hotkeys do not have any effect - the brightness hotkey does not adjust backlight brightness, for example. The UI becomes unresponsive for a few seconds after the crash. The mouse cursor works, but the window manager and individual applications do not accept keyboard or mouse input.
