Reported as fixed by the original reporter; closing as Fix Released. This was caused by some version mismatch between the NetworkManager daemon and nm-applet.

Now when I select a wireless network, I get a "Wireless network disconnected" instantly. I used to use intrepid but updated to Jaunty when Beta was released.
