Title:
Keyboard input goes to previous window after switching in GNOME Shell
on Ubuntu 24.04
Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Description:
After switching focus to a different application window in GNOME Shell on
Ubuntu 24.04, typing input is intermittently sent to the previously active
window instead of the newly focused one. This occurs roughly every third window
switch and happens regardless of "focus follows mouse" or similar focus
settings. The issue is reproducible with multiple native and non-native
applications and causes significant workflow disruption.
Expected behavior:
Keyboard input should always be directed to the currently focused window
immediately upon switching.
Actual behavior:
Keyboard input is mistakenly directed to the last previously focused window,
despite the active window appearing visually focused.
Environment:
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
GNOME Shell 46.0

X11 session (no “focus follows mouse” enabled)
$`gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences | grep focus`
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode 'click'
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-new-windows 'smart'
Multi-monitor setup (one additional screen usually, but occurs in
single screen mode similarly)
Steps to reproduce:
Switch from one window to another (via mouse click or keyboard shortcut).
Start typing.
Observe that the input is sent to the prior window rather than the currently
focused window (and archiving mail messages, deleting stuff or whatever
shortcuts are bound to usual keys in the previous app).
