I purge all the nvidia drivers and it is fixed now. In fact, there were multiple versions of the drivers installed - 535, 560 and 570 and I have to purge them all. I remember that Ubuntu release upgrade includes a "clean up" step at the end of the upgrade. Does this indicate that this doesn't do a great job and needs to be reviewed?
