What I could gather is that gsd-power is crashing in the log-in screen, not in the logged-in user session.
Unfortunately the logs are not showing at which point it is crashing. Instead, they show upower normally running: Mar 25 20:51:55 jonhutch-Victus-by-HP-16-s0xxx dbus-daemon[1200]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.UPower' unit='upower.service' requested by ':1.50' (uid=120 pid=2518 comm="/usr/bin/gnome-shell" label="unconfined") Mar 25 20:51:55 jonhutch-Victus-by-HP-16-s0xxx systemd[1]: Starting upower.service - Daemon for power management... Mar 25 20:51:55 jonhutch-Victus-by-HP-16-s0xxx dbus-daemon[1200]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.UPower' Mar 25 20:51:55 jonhutch-Victus-by-HP-16-s0xxx systemd[1]: Started upower.service - Daemon for power management. And the other commands you run also show UPower running and responsive on the system bus. This crash is tracked in https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/88f828c68cc47af76af0b64d719480df1ef1dfc4 and shows many occurrences, both from GDM and from the logged-in user. Some of those systems show "gsd-power[3938]: Couldn't connect to proxy: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.UPower: Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.UPower': timed out", which then explains the crash (but doesn't explain why UPower is not running); but that is not the case for your system. While fixing the crash would be trivial, and is already fixed in Ubuntu 25.04, until we can understand why gsd-power fails to connect to UPower it wouldn't regain its functionality as we would simply quit the process gracefully rather than letting it crash. ** Changed in: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed ** Summary changed: - gnome-settings-daemon crashes in GDM session + gnome-settings-daemon crashes failing to connect to UPower ** Also affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu Oracular) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2101176 Title: gnome-settings-daemon crashes failing to connect to UPower Status in gnome-settings-daemon package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in gnome-settings-daemon source package in Jammy: New Status in gnome-settings-daemon source package in Noble: New Status in gnome-settings-daemon source package in Oracular: New Bug description: Randomly after startup after about 30s I get a system alert. I have reported the error to ubuntu already a few days ago. I have attached screenshots of the error details, as I cannot easily copy the content. From my own research I found this bug fix in non-LTS ubuntu, might this be the issue? https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/47.2-0ubuntu1 On my search I also found a lead on this possibly being related to old nvidia drivers. I have recently installed nvidia drivers so this might be the ultimate cause of the error. I have installed nvidia- driver-550, which is more recent than the version mentioned in the earlier report I found. Thank you very much for any help!
