I suspect what's causing this is the web torrent has been updated but the local hashes *aren't*, or generally a mismatch between whatever the hashes transmission is using and the stuff the webtorrent is sending. Other internet archive torrents warn that this will fail to download properly, but it's *still a bug* on transmission's side since this behaviour of just DDoSing the swarm by continually downloading and discarding pieces is a not very nice behaviour

redownloads over and over Status in transmission package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: not 100% sure how to verify that this is what's going on but this has been observed on more than one torrent on more than one system(incl a non-ubuntu one) running transmission : example torrent: > Name: v56ontariolawreports1925 > Hash: 19db757aa6270af6cead38bc707ac0131106ddb9 > Magnet: > Total size: 1.14 GB (1.14 GB wanted) > Downloaded: 11.55 GB (+35.74 GB discarded after failed checksum) so this is a ~1 GB sized torrent that somehow 35 GB has been downloaded for from 3 web torrents + at least one seed to start this particular torrent I added a directory and copied the v56ontariolawreports1925 data manually and then transmission-remote -a "magnet:?xt=urn:btih:19db757aa6270af6cead38bc707ac0131106ddb9&dn=v56ontariolawreports1925&tr=http%3A%2F%2Fbt1.archive.org%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fudp-tracker.shittyurl.org%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.moeking.me%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fopentracker.i2p.rocks%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=http%3A%2F%2Fopentracker.i2p.rocks%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=http%3A%2F%2Fbt2.archive.org%3A6969%2Fannounce&ws=http%3A%2F%2Fia601503.us.archive.org%2F13%2Fitems%2F&ws=http%3A%2F%2Fia801503.us.archive.org%2F13%2Fitems%2F&ws=https%3A%2F%2Farchive.org%2Fdownload%2F" (granted some of these trackers are broken) transmission-remote -t 1 -v what should happen if the data is valid it should be verified before downloading begins if the data was somehow not valid it should be redownloaded from peers+web peers but surely it shouldn't be downloading the same pieces over and over again 35x what is happening: the data is being downloaded over and over again, after a very long time i've seen it eventually succeed but not without using a *lot* of bandwidth. in the logs: [2025-01-07 13:37:49.837] WRN v56ontariolawreports1925 [scrubbed]:14723 [qBittorrent 4.4.1]: got
