Title:
System gets blank/black screen after login

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
recently when logging in to Ubuntu desktop with GDM the screen appears
black only with cursor appearing as it is, rebooting fixes the problem
but only temporary as it occurs randomly initial guess was that this
occurs due to the hack suggested at
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2077216/comments/4
  for issue
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2077216 but even
  after disabling the

hack(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2077216/comments/15)
  this occurs.

This is common to both x11 & wayland sessions.
