This is probably the same as an Nvidia driver issue that I've had... Or similar... I had the same issue with the Gen 6, and gave up hibernating completely with the gen7/8.
I could hibernate & resume 1-2 times, and then when resuming... the laptop would hang, eventually my desktop session would crash and I'd get the login screen. When not using the Nvidia GPU at all, it worked consistently. This is the error I'd see in dmesg: [ 14.045062] nvidia 0000:01:00.0: PM: failed to quiesce async: error - Seems you can't even shutdown... I don't remember if I encountered that problem. Try uninstalling the Nvidia drivers or blacklisting the nvidia module and see if it still occurs.
