When running via Xorg, this will not occur, with the added feature that gnome-session may also be restarted manually via alt+f2 and 'r'. This creates a single point of failure within the entire desktop session, and I have personally experienced this and lost work on a clean install with no extra GNOME extensions. Addressing this would contribute greatly to Ubuntu's overall reliability and stability as a desktop OS.
