While the screenshot shows that GNOME is aware of the current resolution being different to the configured resolution, it cannot guess as to which app has caused the change and when is the right time to change back. It's the responsibility of the application (atari800-jz) to clean up after itself.

Install atari800-jz package from Ubuntu Software. 2. Run Atari800 emulator 3. Press ALT-F so that Atari800 goes full screen 4. Quit emulator - press F9 (or ALT-F again and make it crash-quit) 4. Desktop is stuck emulator resolution and user is unable to do anything about it. Clicking on battery icon will not display Power Off/Log out option due to small resolution. Only option then is to press CTRL+ALT+DEL and log out this way. [Workarounds] Have a Settings app running with Display tab selected and placed on top left screen corner. Once emulator quits - change resolution manually.
