Can you try the following?

  - run `xev -event button` in a terminal, this will open a small white square 
window
  - do one click with the scroll wheel inside that window
  - close the window
  - verify that the output in the terminal has exactly one ButtonPress event 
and one ButtonRelease event
  - repeat a few times
