*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1849542 ***
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1849542

I do not think this is a duplicate. My global-messages-db.sqlite is
fine, as all I did on Ubuntu 16.04 was downgrade thunderbird version.

Download from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/1:60.9.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1/+build/18178755

and then

sudo dpkg -i thunderbird_60.9.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1_amd64.deb
thunderbird-gnome-support_60.9.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1_amd64.deb
thunderbird-locale-de_60.9.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1_amd64.deb
thunderbird-locale-en_60.9.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1_amd64.deb
thunderbird-locale-en-us_60.9.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1_all.deb xul-ext-
lightning_60.9.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1_amd64.deb

so the reason is something else.

When trying to start thunderbird 1.68 with my 1.60 profile, the
  following error appears:

The result is a completely unusable thunderbird: the main window
opens, but there are no messages and it is not possible to open any
  secondary window.

Downgrading to 1.60 (from disco) solves this issue.
