what you describe there is confusing but not technically a bug or a gdm issue, the dialog you use is an user one and the login screen is a system one so normal users can't change its configuration... letting the bug closed since that's not really a bug and there are other tickets open about the confusion that creates -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/744615 Title: "No sounds" should disable even the login sound Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: Binary package hint: gdm If a user goes to System | Preferences | Sound and chooses the "No sounds" theme, they are expressing a very clear preference: Don't play sounds. But gdm plays the login sound (the drums) anyway, making the user hunt down the System | Administration | Login Screen dialog where there's a "Play log-in sound" checkbox (thanks to the fix for #437429). gdm should not play the login sound when the user has said "no sounds" in the Sound preferences.
