Title:
logging into a different session breaks sound until reboot

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This is an odd problem, and I'm not quite sure what extra information
to attach, so feel free to ask me for anything you need.

I'm currently running maverick desktop, and I've decided to install
the unity package to test out the netbook interface. I really like it,
but I've noticed a problem where if I log out, log in using unity, log
back out again, then log in using gnome, sound just 'doesn't work' at
  all until the next reboot.
