I compile the document directly from Vim, but every time I do this, Evince find that the document has changed and automatically reloads it. This is fine, but by doing this Evince steals the focus from Vim, leaving me on my workspace with my unfocused Vim window. And since Evince is so smart it doesn't need any preferences window, I can't configure it to not auto-reload modified documents...
