It would appear that something has changed in the Android emulator, and it's less likely to be the cause of the crash.
I'd expected to simply run gnome with animations turned on, run the emulator, get a crash when switching desktops. While this now seems more stable, it does occasionally crash. I can confirm that using the above update resolves the problem.
