This also seems to affect me; when trying to transfer files to my Google Galaxy Nexus Android phone in PTP mode (MTP is not well supported by Ubuntu; and though mtpfs works, it seems quite unreliable). My RAM usage was ridiculous; which eventually caused it to be killed by OOM killer; or some similar cleanup process.
