Hello Bas,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with opening pdfs in
Thunderbird. You made this bug report in 2017 and there have been several
versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to
this bug?
If you are, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.
G

Title:
totem should not claim to be able to open pdfs

Bug description:
For some dumb reason, thunderbird is opening pdfs with totem instead
  of a decent pdf reader.

I'm aware I can override and configure all this in Thunderbid, but IMO
  the default should Just Work.

I don't have the patience atm to weed through all the xdg-open and
mime and .desktop-files spaghetti shit to figure out why the f*ck a
mediaplayer would ever be the default to open a pdf when decent pdf
readers are available on my system, but I'm pretty sure totem is at
fault here for announcing to the system somewhere that it is able to
  handle pdfs.
