The login screen always uses Wayland, even before you've decided to
choose Xorg. So...

Username displays incorrectly on login screen

Just did a clean install on a mid 2012 15" macbook pro. Every time
that I get to the login screen, my username appears as strange blocks
and shapes as pictured here:
