I think this issue could depend on the fact i'm using two monitors on my
laptop.

I tested when i use only the laptop monitor the applet works fine. However when 
the second monitor is attached the nm-applet stop working. 
I don't know if this behaviour can be reproduced on any laptop.

Also, i would report what i think is a linked issue here. 
When i reboot without the second monitor attached the login screen appears 
fine, while when the second monitor is attached the login screen appears as in 
the attached picture in this post.
