Thunderbird shows large overlay emoji's whilst downloading mail

Bug description:
When launching Thunderbird for the first time after adding a Gmail
account it begins to download mail. As it does this large emoji's are
displayed on top of the email list (see screenshot).
Tested on Bionic daily image 27-03-18.
