If a sysfs file does not exist or sysfs does not accept the value there is currently no feedback. Besides of the fact that the user expects to get a feedback, this is also a bit suboptimal if you use system automation tools like puppet to configure your server systems. /etc/init.d/sysfsutils shoul provide visual and exitcode feedback to inform the user about problems.
