  nautilus-desktop crashed with signal 5 in _XReply()

Bug description:
  I upgraded Ubuntu from 17.04 to 17.10, in a VMware Workstation 12 VM.
  It has become extremely slow (though CPU and I/O aren't very high).
  Thinking it was a display driver issue, I shutdown my VM, turned off
  3D acceleration in the VMware settings, and then booted up Ubuntu.
  Immediately after logging in, Nautilus apparently crashed.
