Public bug reported:

There is no menu from clicking the left or right mouse buttons on the systray
icon from the hplip-gui package in Ubuntu 17.10. Other systray icons, like the
one from Dropbox, can be fixed by setting XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity before
running the program. However, this does not restore the systray menu for the
hplip-gui package:
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity hp-systray

** Affects: hplip (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
