As suggested in this thread https://forum.ubuntu-
fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=1989216 installing gtk2-engines seems to solve
the problem on that machine running U14.04 with intel core i7 haswell
graphics and no proprietary graphic driver.

But on the other machine running U14.04 with nvidia graphics and
proprietary drivers, where Firefox 46 runs fine, there is no
gtk2-engines installed.

Is this i7 Haswell specific ?

How gtk2-engine may help ?

I also confirm U16.04 is not affected (on the haswell one) but now has
proprietary driver (microcode firmware for intel CPU's from Intel
microcode) which is not proposed on U14.04
