thanks Gunnar, I will try and test this soon. however I did notice your use of XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP is not consistent with the spec. It changed when it became an official spec, which allows specifying multiple values colon seperated

For instance on my system I can either set it to "none", "IBus", or "fcitx".
