Upstart causes all sorts of issues in a modern system that is running systemd, search the bug tracker for " Could not connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused" Because of this dependency when I try and purge upstart to make my system actually login (.xsession-errors shows a call to upstart-udev-bridge which fails) I have to switch to a completely different desktop environment.
