Late to this....but on 14.04 Studio I get hangs from all NVIDIA drivers for my Nvidia Quadro 4000 - even the latest. I don't get this with the Nouveau driver...but the resolution is 800x600 with that.
I am commenting because I am wondering if the issue is heat....variable crashes at different times doing different things....but more common when viewing videos ie. when more GPU heat. GPU here was running 80-87 degC - despite many fans in the case...even when not doing much. Vacuuming the fan on the video card and all the case fans has it running around 49-60 degC (watching videos).
