Hello John, or anyone else affected, Accepted libmtp into trusty-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libmtp/1.1.6-20-g1b9f164-1ubuntu2.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.
