The Software Center is still running (since almost 20 hours), two new progress bars have appeared saying "Searching waiting" - see screenshot.

Now I would like to install the GNOME desktop and I used the "Ubuntu Software Center" for this purpose. I choose the Gnome desktop package and started the installation. The installation is now running for over 7 hours, and the progress bar in the Software Center window stays in the middle position while the "progress" icon keeps turning around. When I display processes with top, I see software-center, compiz and Xorg as the top CPU consumers with 5-10% each. Overall CPU usage is between 10 and 30 percent (displayed with vmstat) and there is no significant swapping or other I/O activity. So I wonder what the process (softwar-center) is actually doing / what it is waiting for. My machine is a HP laptop EliteBook8530w, with two Intel Core2 Duo @ 2.66 GHz and 3.8 GByte of main memory. For the moment I'll keep Software Center running, in case you need any further information from the running system. Please also advise me if I can safely terminate (kill) Software Center, without leaving the system in an inconsistent state.
